ATS format guide
An ATS-friendly resume format preserves a clear text hierarchy from contact details through experience and education. Design choices should support that order rather than becoming the only way to understand it.
01
Start with the candidate’s name, target role and direct contact details. Follow with a concise professional summary, a relevant skills section, reverse-chronological work experience and education. Use familiar section headings, consistent job-date formatting and real text for all essential information. A readable font, restrained color contrast and printer-safe margins help both digital and human review. Photos are often omitted in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, while expectations differ by market. Hyperlinks should include understandable visible text, and the downloaded PDF should preserve selection and copying. Before applying, parse the finished document, compare every extracted field with the source and correct reading-order problems. Formatting improves accessibility, but it cannot replace job-specific evidence or truthful qualifications.
